Just read the UofH website. BfloGriff is feeling kind of queasy. The silence from THE POWERS THAT BE is becoming deafening.

Binghamton is talking about dropping to D3. I don't see Fairfield moving. Watch Sacred Heart to make move out of the Northeast.

That leaves an opening in America East, I wonder if a MAAC school will jump over there in a few years - maybe Fairfield?

Even so, could this start a new trend of D1 mid-majors dropping to D3? That would give them a good advantage with recruiting given their superior facilities and not having to spend as much.

Maybe the NCAA can relax rules and let schools field just 2 D1 level programs and drop the rest to D3 to save money.

What about AJ Green? He played at Bishop Kearney. I hope that Reggie and his staff are reaching out to kids like this.

AJ Gray? He scored zero points in their 24 games as a freshman. Hartford is moving to D3 in 2025. I doubt there is a mad dash to get Gray.

Given that the nine remaining America East programs are public universities, I doubt Fairfield is seen as a fit.

Perhaps you could see some geography-based conference shuffling to cut costs at the mid and low levels of D1. I worry about Canisius and Niagara with this. MAAC schools like Iona, Manhattan, Siena, Quinnipiac, Fairfield, and Monmouth could break off and form a new league with the likes of Hofstra, Northeastern, Long Island, and Drexel. Other than exit fees, I struggle to understand why such a move hasn't already happened in the northeast.

These two don’t fit the MAAC model. Both schools are big and will go at a drop of a hat. Our location doesn’t help us. Every MAAC schools complains about the WNY trek. Wish we had pushed back in the day to get into the Eastern 8 with schools like Bona & Duquesne. Those geographies would have worked in our favor.

Hofstra, Northeastern and Drexel are in the CAA. No way are they leaving that league. They are also huge schools, far larger than the MAAC schools you mention, which would want nothing to do with them for that reason alone.

Maybe, but school size isn’t entirely relevant in today’s D1 athletics. It’s about commitment to athletics, facilities, etc. Look at the A10 and its diverse institutional styles.

In that sense, the schools I mentioned fit much better, as private schools without football, with the aforementioned MAAC schools. The CAA is rooted in the south, and I’d imagine the northern schools would improve recruiting in a more regionally-focused league.

The WNY trip is seem as an albatross by fellow league members, so I’m just worried as I consider the current D1 climate.

No one is knocking on our door or Niagara’s. Both schools held on to being independent way too long in the late 70’s. What could have been. What’s the choice now? Unless the MAAC expands and you have two divisions east / west like some of the power conferences. I don’t see Ensor being that aggressive. We better figure it out. Look at what the other schools are doing with regards to facilities.

Wonder what the future of the MAAC looks like. Robert Morris & Sacred Heart wanted in and the league said no.
