Subject: The Athletics Budget?

According to an article in today's Buffalo News, Bona had an Athletics budget of nearly $14.8M for the 2019-2020 school year, but lost $$ in 2020-2021 due to Covid and fans not being allowed into Reilly Center for MBB games. The new A.D. (from Duke!) aims to correct that and take the Bonnies to the "next level", according to the article. Does anyone here know the Griff's Athletics budget these days or in our best days? IMO the first necessary step to the "next level" for CC Athletics must come from the Academics side;to gain University status in fact (as opposed to grandfathered in,in name only). I say, yet again,"The University of Saint Peter Canisius, in Buffalo",SPCU,must become reality now,if she is are to remain in D1 and become a"next level" institution our self. While Buffalo thrives CC survives. She can do better than that.

That wouldn't confuse anyone...........
St Peter's College in NJ is literally named after St Peter Canisius.

It's already bad enough that outside of Buffalo proper, people already have to say.... Canisius College (pause) in Buffalo.
Most of the people in Rochester have no idea where or what Canisius College is. It often gets confused with Conesus Lake as it is pronounced the same.

Saying this.... Canisius University works just fine.

The school supports 16 sports and has a budget of $12,162,555. Let’s see what they do going forward. We agree the school needs to spend more. Not sure if we will ever reach Bona numbers. Their budget would be larger due to travel and playing in the A10. Bona will fly when the Griffs ride the bus.

He is a guy with a dream which is too much a fantasy. Grateful that he loves Canisius and the 716.

Never questioned his love for Canisius and WNY. But we'd be the laughing stock of the freaking country to be named The University of Saint Peter Canisius, in Buffalo. He also has wildly unrealistic thoughts on what can be done financially. And what about the elevated or screwed in court? LOL.

The important element is to achieve University status. The "in Buffalo" is not, it's just a bit of pride in our city which,BTW, is gaining more positive attention frequently these days. Isn't SPU in New Jersey named after St. Peter the Apostle? There are about three dozen Saints named Peter. Call CC SPCU or CU if you like, after Alma Mater reaches that status. She will with the right leadership in place. WTF, wtfs up with you man?

The school has enough issues and confusing a potential consumer on “”by changing the name isn’t the best idea. No one cares if the school is in Buffalo. In all reality adding Buffalo might be an even bigger mistake. Like it or not. Our city has enough PR problems by the media.University status is a “nice to have”. That’s not going to jumpstart the enrollment. The school needs to redefine it’s long term strategic vision. It’s been way too limiting and living in a cocoon. The school lost sight of how the world / college education was changing. The good news is as of now, enrollment is up for the coming year. The school is at a cross roads. It needs to select the right person to lead the college. Someone who can manage the present & lead us into the future. Let’s see what they do. St. Peter pray for us. Go Griffs!

I don’t see Canisius raising the athletics budget at all if the school has financial problems from lack of enrollment like it once had because frankly it is cheaper to go to state schools and get more amenities today. St Bonaventure, Niagara and many private schools have some of the very same problems Canisius College has with enrollment issues.

Canisius since it isn’t going to add much to the athletics budget than dropping some sports should be considered? I know this isn’t going to be popular here but Canisius and Niagara basketball suffers compared to St Bonaventure and UB basketball because those schools don’t fund ice hockey programs that are very costly. Canisius and Niagara has to either make hockey really big time like Hockey East commitment wise or forget it. Middling hockey is hurting basketball because Canisius and Niagara are middling it in basketball also.

Again the Griffs need to fix KAC to make it a modern today basketball facility. I would love to hear the excuses from Canisius College or Canisius alums give why St Bonaventure Bonnies fan can have a video replay board and Canisius Golden Griffins basketball fan can’t have nice things like that get out here with stuff like that? It is 2021 but Canisius KAC is something you see in 1921 small seating numbers like when basketball was played in dance halls and no replay boards because it wasn’t invented yet in 1921. I really believe Canisius athletics can fix this if Canisius College made the money commitment with fund raising to renovate the KAC in my opinion. Go Griffs! Let’s Go Buffalo

1)please tell us your redesign/fix plan for the KAC.

2)please tell us which two sports you would get rid of. The most expensive to operate? the least expensive? ones that don't generate $ or fans? The ones that only offer partial athletic scholarships? Do tell

Oh BTW -NCAA minimum for DI is 14, we are at 16 (18 if you separate track and cross county) but they go hand in hand.

I am not saying you are wrong. I'm just tired of the blanket statements of we need..., we need..., they should do this..., they should do that...

get involved. Donate. get others involved, get others to donate.

This is a great discussion overall and important. I would love to see the school invest more in facilities and staffing to better support and grow / market Athletics - but the “non revenue” sports often increase unroll meant for full tuition paying students so if anything - that should grow. I think working to help student athletes cash in on NIL would be a good start too. I see many signs of progress and feel good about the basketball team going into the season. Let’s see what they can do. You never know - they could get hot and secure a bid to the dance and then alum will help donate to support a new field house.

Bonaventure is actually not having issues with enrollment. Our late President did a fantastic job in his 4 years. This will be our 4th straight incoming class over 500. Our overall enrollment is up at it's highest level in years. They've added many popular programs into our new Health Professions School, new programs in our Communications school, Cyber Security, and more. They've expanded online offering substantially. They've added Track and Field, and fully funded Lacrosse program, both of which brought more students on campus. Private schools need to be creative, especially in Covid times. Bona has managed to grow and is poised for more growth into the future. Endowment is up almost 25% in the last 5 years.

Canisius admissions would have lowered their standards for one person....
Bob Lanier would have been a Griff and the story would have written itself.

CC is headed on the right track. Unfortunately it took too long for leadership to wake up and adjust the curriculum. I agree private schools need to step up, be creative and be willing to adjust vs. holding on to the past. KAC needs an influx of cash. Use the top of the parking lot as your footprint. Develop practice fields behind Mt. Joe’s. Time to get going CC. Hopefully the new president has a bigger vision for athletics. Go Griffs!
