Date Posted: 938373929PDT In reply to: Jim Day 's message, "Hey Capt." on 937517280PDT Yes I do release sometimes. It wasn't long ago that NONE of us here released Marlin but claims like the one Ted Barta made in last months Sport Fishing mag. make it sound like killing ANY Marlin Anywhere is a sin. He states "I now realize that I can no longer kill any billfish, in any ocean, for any reason. I see no reedeming value in it. Certainly the present status of our billfishery makes it morally wrong". Ted making statements like that are morally wrong. Michael G. Hinton who just completed a study entitled "The status of the Blue Marlin population of the Pacific" (a study of data spanning 1955 to 1997) states that "the Blue Marlin stock in the Pacific is in a healthy condition, with current levels of biomass and standardized fishing effort near the levels required to maintain average maximum sustained yield". A statement based on research....not hype. And thats just Blue Marlin. What about Shortnose billfish? Plenty of em' around and excellent eating. We eat a lot of Blue Marlin here in Hawaii also. Many time durring the year, it's the most common fish being caught. The way I figure it, for every pound of fish meat released here in Kona, it's being replaced by fish meat that was caught by a longliner or equivelent type of mass fish catching method that causes a fair percentage of "bycatch waste". It's the "waste" part that gets to me. While longliners have shifted to methods that produce less "waste" than years ago, there still needs to be work done on reducing it more. Did I ramble on enough for ya? Capt. Jeff [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
