Subject: Israel summer 2006

Hello people. Long time no post.
My summer has been less boring than usual. For five weeks (June 2nd to July 8th), I was working in Israel with the Tel Gezer Project. We excavated a section of Gezer and helped prepare the site to become a national park. It was interesting and grueling work. We stayed at a place called Neve Shalom, about 15 minutes away from Gezer. On weekdays we usually woke up at 4 A.M. to catch the bus to the tel at 5. We'd work for a while, eat a 30-minute breakfast at 8:30, work some more, have a 15-minute watermelon break at 11, and then work until the bus came at 12:45 P.M. After that time, it's too hot to work outside.
We'd get back to the motel, eat, take a shower, and at 4 P.M. we had pottery washing, lasting 1-2 hours. At 6 P.M., we had lecture for an hour, followed by dinner at 7. After that, we'd usually be too tired to do much else. Bedtime was between 8 and 11 P.M. I felt like a senior citizen.

We had no restful weekends. Instead, we toured Israel. We got to "sleep in" until 7 A.M on weekends. During the 1st and 4th weekends, we went to Jerusalem. During the 2nd weekend, we toured sites in the Sea of Galilee area in the north, and during the 3rd weekend, we toured sites in the Dead Sea area in the south.

It was amazing to visit those places. I think that I have a better understanding of some things in the Bible now after seeing the ruins and their surrounding environments. The landscape changes so drastically within just a few miles. Israel is about the size of New Jersey, with lush forests in the north and desert in the south, as well as having tall mountain ski areas, and the 1,200 ft below-sea-level Dead Sea. It’s a very bizarre place.
I'm glad I left when I did. We could hear Israel's bombing of the Gaza Strip at night from where we were staying. The booms were getting louder towards the end. And now Israel's situation is even crazier than usual.

It was a great experience though. I'm glad I got to go. Now I’m done with my "archaeology and culture of the ancient near east" major. I still have two more semesters to finish up my sociology/anthropology and religion majors before I have to enter the real world. It's so scary.

If you'd like to see some summer pictures, click or copy the link. I still have a lot more pictures to develop. Hopefully I'll finish before the end of summer. :/
