Subject: Tax 'n Spend Happy

I've always thought that conservative republicans overreached when they preached that liberal democrats are tax 'n spend happy. NOT ANYMORE since I read Elliott Brack's most recent opinion piece about what makes GCPSS great.

When comparing the Research Triangle of North Carolina with Gwinnett County, Brack says "---Gwinnett has better government than does North Carolina." Why? Because
"[s]chool boards in North Carolina DO NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO TAX THEIR CONSTITUENTS, AS THEY DO IN GEORGIA." The BoE "---can DIRECTLY levy up to 20 mills for school operations, and under special circumstances, CAN LEVY MORE." And this ability to directly tax Gwinnett property owners "---TAKES OUT FIGHTING WITH THE LOCAL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OVER A BUDGET." (emphasis added)

In retrospect, local taxpayers shouldn't be surprised about these quotes from a GCPSS cheerleader who obviously believes the more tax money an unfettered BoE can spend, the better the academic achievement of students will be.
