an event plaguing society for over half a century –

I see occasional criticism of Alvin’s salary. Let’s compare what we (that’d be Gwinnett taxpayers, not psychotics) pay for school administration compared to what Commission charter schools cost.

The Georgia Charter School Commission performs top level administrative duties for their schools much like the BOE of a large school system like Gwinnett.

All public schools have their student data run through the QBE formula to determine the amount of state funding they receive. The state administrative cost deducted from GCPS’s QBE earnings was zero, while the Charter School Commission retained $32,775 of Ivy Prep’s QBE earnings for administrative costs.

“Ah,” you say, “Commission school funding is more involved because of the additional calculations related to local tax revenue.” Indeed it is. The Charter School Commission retained an additional $38,219 of Ivy Prep’s revenue from that amount for its trouble.

There is only one other operating Commission school which had $32,775 deducted from its funding. Total education funding retained by the Charter School Commission for FY2010 is $101,586 to educate 436 kids. That’s $233 per student in administrative costs.

Another way to view this is if we paid Alvin and all BOE members an annual salary of $5 million a year, GCPS administrative per capita expense would STILL be far lower than the Charter School Commission.

Such a deal.
