Subject: Too big to fail - Part 5:

A bigger GCPSS is a better GCPSS, right? WRONG! About 6 years ago, Richard Tucker, then-President/CEO of the Gwinnett County Chamber of Commerce said "[t]he schools are the most important thing in this county as it relates to economic development." Carol Ann Stough, a real estate agent, estimated that Simpson elememtary (Norcross Cluster)added $20,000 to the price of a house in Peachtree Corners.

Of course that also meant high test scores! So what's happened in 2010 to CRCT scores as GCPSS added about 30,000 K-12 students between the 2003-04 to 2009-10 school years? Well, of 11 Metro Area public school systems -- 4 City and 7 County -- ALL with significantly smaller K-12 student enrollments than GCPSS:

o The Forsyth County Public School System left GCPSS in its dust! Forsyth scores BEAT GCPSS in ALL 5 categories in 3rd, 5th and 8th grade tests,

o excluding the City of Atlanta, Clayton and DeKalb Counties (which are underperformers anyway you cut it), the AVERAGE CRCT SCORE of the REMAINING 8 Metro Area public school systems BEAT GCPSS's score in EACH of the 5 categories in 3rd, 5th and 8th grade tests,

o again, excluding the City of Atlanta, Clayton and DeKalb Counties, the AVERAGE CRCT SCORE of 4 (50%) of the remaining 8 Metro Area public school systems BEAT GCPSS's score in ALL 5 categories in 3rd, 5th and 8th grade tests.

We should thank the City of Atlanta, Clayton and DeKalb Counties, otherwise GCPSS's 2010 CRCT performance could make it the Alabama of Atlanta Metro Area public school systems!

Maybe the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and current underwater homeowners in the Norcross Cluster might want to rethink their views of a mega-sized GCPSS's positive contributions to the County's economic development and individual home prices.
