The young lady at DHS, whose name I don't know, tested positive for latent (inactive) tuberculosis. This type of infection is NOT contagious, but it means that, at some point, she was exposed to someone who did have the active disease, which IS quite contagious.

Contrary to what the public is likely to think, the search isn't for students who may have contracted TB from her (which isn't physically possible), but the source of her infection.

The problem is, a person in otherwise good health can unknowingly harbor latent TB for years since it is asymptomatic, which makes it difficult to determine the source. That doesn't make it any less dangerous, which is why the Dept of Health takes the measures we are seeing.
