Inside Syracuse's Upcoming 5th High School
Video

May 25, 2007 - A fifth high school in the city of Syracuse is getting ready to open its doors. The Institute of Technology has been in the works for more than five years and is finally going to welcome its freshman class. There hasn't been a graduating class at the former Central High since 1975 but multi million dollar renovations are in the works and an idea about eight years in the making is finally getting off the ground.
"This is going to be a school of choice," says acting principal John Dittmann. "We like to think of it kind of as a private school with public school prices."

The Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central will be a school that mixes traditional academics with career and technical themes to get students to reach their full potential.

"Research says because a student has an interest in that theme, they tend to excell in academics because they see the relevance and how it matches with something they're really interested in," Dittmann says.

The 104 year old building offers a unique atmosphere with elaborate features including an elegant 1,900 seat auditorium that was the original home of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. In fact, the school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

"There's windows in every room. Very large windows in every room. Very fine woodwork, marble accents, so it's a different environment than the other schools mainly built in the 1960s and 1970s," describes Dittmann.

Construction is supposed to start this fall and last about a year and a half but the price tag is actually less than what it will cost to renovate Fowler High, the school built in the 1970s to replace it.

The school is still looking for students to be a part of its first freshman class. This fall there will be 125 students and every year after, 225 more. Next week, eight teachers will be picked to join the staff at the Institute of Technology to get the study body even more interested.

If your son or daughter is currently in the eighth grade and would like to learn more about the high school, contact the school's guidance counselor.
