Subject: Buffalo Has Power

In East Amherst, our power has come on....off since last Thurs. Will do a reunion report tomorrow....and the two (yes, two) feet of snow is gone....36,000 homes in the town of Amherst can each fill one and a half trucks with debris from what they are calling the "October Surprise"....the single worst storm in Buffalo history with twelve dead thus far....a week ago Monday, it was 70 degrees....just four days later, the WNY area was decimated....trees split in half...Our willow is just a third of its former self....they hit the switch last night and it set on fire...our power lines are in the back of the house. Today, a team led by a guy from Syracuse...he actually lived in my subdivision on Onondaga Hill and my Dad was his family's dry cleaner....came into the back yard and took the limbs from off the lines and restored our electricity....52 degrees in the house for a week....not pretty!!! But a sump pump, the price of which had me cursing for months, kept our basement dry....if you can afford to have your current pump replaced with one that works on water, do yourself a favor and get one now....everyone else in the area had feet of water in their cellars....and we had not one drop. Our next major investment will be a generator that runs on the gas from the house not propane or gas from a can....it is the way in which we can guarantee never having to use it!!!
More later....night, night K
