Subject: West Virginia Still Mucking Out

I continue to be amazed and dismayed at the length of time it takes to effect recovery from a natural disaster. We're still making trips to the Gulf Coast, helping the folks who survived Katrina--and how long ago did that hurricane hit? I just returned from a trip to Mingo County, WV, which borders KY, to render what assistance we (disaster recovery team) could to victims of the floods they experienced last May 9-10. We're already marshalling resources to go into GA to muck out from the floods they experienced in September. Relief organizations (FEMA and Red Cross) don't want recovery teams just yet--while they make assessments of who will receive aid and who won't. We go to help those who FEMA and the Red Cross won't or can't help--usually the poorer, older, and disabled who have just enough to be disqualified for aid but not enough to help themselves. We expect to get clearance by November first.

Our church gives us what financial assistance the budget can stand, which generally enables us to make two mission trips a year. We collect scrap metal/aluminum cans to help pay for equipment for our trailer, pay for gas, and building materials for those we aid. The generosity of the congregation and the community make it possible for us to make more recovery trips.

When people approach you for donations to enable them to reach out and help the folks who suffer losses in disasters, I hope you'll think about how it could be you who a disaster recovery team aids; whether they are from the Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Jewish, Catholic or other denomination. The smallest of donations can be stretched by effective teams. But before you hand over your donations, check out the group soliciting--there are those low-lifes who have discovered they can profit from scamming in the name of disaster relief/recovery.
