Subject: Sounds of the Season

It's too early in the season to appreciate the smells of the season; leaves burning in the side ditches most notably; and the leaves at the lower elevations are just barely turning color, so there is nothing yet to brag about in the sights of the season; although I did pass a field of pumpkins ready for picking.

However, around my house, the chief sound of the season has made its presence known. As I drive through the woods road to my parking spot beneath the trees, or if I actually use the driveway, I can hear the pop-pop of acorns as they explode beneath the weight of my truck.

If there is anything to the long standing adage that a large mast crop means we're in for a hard winter, I'd better get a more firewood cut and split. I've not had a "wooly-worm" report to confirm what the acorns are predicting, but the worm forcast is as certain to come as the weather report on February 2 from a specific groundhog in PA. In the meantime, we tread carefully as we walk because the acorns are as difficult to walk on as marbles.
