Subject: A Little Too Much Water

When my September water bill arrived I was astounded. Almost four times greater than normal, it signaled that I had a water leak somewhere along the 500 feet plus water line from the meter to our house. In the past, walking the line would disclose the location of the leak and it was a simple matter to dig out the area, cut the line and splice in a piece of pipe.

I have walked the line time and time again and still have seen no evidence of the leak. Usually, when there is a leak of that magnitude, there is a marshy area above the leak--or at least in close proximity. I requested the water company to come out and double check the meter. They contend there is nothing that could go wrong with the meter to provide such a great variance in the bill. I then dug exploratory holes along the route, figuring that if the leak were somewhere close to the hole, water would fill and I would narrow down the location of the leak. No water collected in the holes.

When the October bill arrived, shocking me further--it was five times higher than normal--I began to price out the cost of a whole new line--for about $600 I could replace the entire line--digging the trench with a rented trencher--and splicing in 5 100ft lenths of pipe. Now, $600 isn't such a tremendous price, but I'm a cheap s.o.b. and decided to start digging out the line by hand so I could find the leak and save enough to pay the tax man in December. I've got 100 feet exposed so far, with no sign of the leak and a whole new set of blisters and calluses on my hands.

I've had enough leaks in the compound (five water lines in total) to spot a leak when it happens. There is no evidence that a leak exists beyond the water bill.

I have advised the water company that I will bill them for any expenses incurred in fixing this problem unless they can provide me with proof positive that there is nothing wrong with the meter. They remain silent.

Isn't home ownership grand?!
