Subject: Paula Parolin's sister passes

Laura (Parolin) Mangicaro

April 7, 2012 Laura (Parolin) Mangicaro, 89, died peacefully on April 7, with her family at her side. Born in Syracuse on October 30, 1922, to Louis and Concetta Parolin, Laura was the oldest of 12 children. She was gifted in the visual arts and had an early career as a fashion illustrator for the local newspapers. Still in her teens, she married the late Russell T. Mangicaro Sr. and assisted him in running the family grocery business. When Russell was appointed Onondaga County Commissioner of Jurors and sold the family business, Laura began a third career with the Onondaga County Department of Social Services. She retired in 1996. Above all, Laura was a devoted wife to her husband of 54 years, a tender and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a caring sister. Demure and understated, Laura was the heart and soul of her family, and she gave to others limitlessly. For many years, Laura had been a much-loved resident of Elderwood Long-Term Care Facility, and the family wishes to thank the Elderwood staff for the compassion and affectionate care they provided. Laura was predeceased by her husband, Commissioner Russell T. Mangicaro Sr.; brothers, Johnny Parolin and Louis Parolin Jr.; and a sister, Madelyn Mussi. She is survived by her children, Mary (Carmen) Rizzo of South Carolina and Syracuse, George (Bonnie) Mangicaro of Liverpool, Connie (Chuck) Florczyk of Liverpool, Russ (Cindy) Mangicaro Jr. of Syracuse, John (Carolyn) Mangicaro of Kirkville and Laurie L. Mangicaro of Baldwinsville. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Pio (Elvira) Parolin, Pedina Canino, Alfred Parolin, Rita (Richard) Cooper, Tarzy (Carol Anne) Parolin, Richard Parolin, Dolores Dulaney and Paula Porcello; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Mass at noon at Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Syracuse. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley), North Syracuse, New York. To honor Laura's lifelong devotion to children, contributions may be made to Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, One Children's Circle, Syracuse, NY 13210.
