Subject: Spring time in the mountains

I've just returned from my annual pilgrimage to the altar of the trout at Cherokee NC. Every year, long about Halloween, I begin to feel the burdens of responsibility, husbandry and citizenship start to over charge my psychic batteries and I begin planning my escape to the rivers and streams of the mountains. Now, some folks go to the coast and up the sand and sun to find their balance, but I have an aversion to getting sand in my creases and cracks. Only by sticking my legs into cold running water can I find my center.

While I can get away to the mountains to fish just about anytime of the year, it's only in the spring that I find real peace. Each April for the past 15 years my son-in-law, one of his life-long friends and I have spent a week fishing on the Cherokee Reservation. Before that, I made the trip with a couple of nephews. Near as I can figure, I began the tradition in 1972. Forty years of cheap therapy. I hope I survive long enough to take my grandsons along--sort of initiating a continuance of the tradition. I'd wager that others have a stress management technique they practice regularly. Isn't it a blessing when you can discover what makes you happy early enough in life to enjoy it throughout life?
