Subject: Freshmen

I'd already been in the classroom three days, three different classrooms, when I clocked in yesterday to take an English teacher's classes. She has two classes of Juniors and one class of freshmen. I haven't drawn freshmen classes in some time and at first was surprised at their being height challenged and at their tendency to be excessively talkative.
About thirty minutes into the 90 minute period I had given themseveral requests to "pipe down and focus ". Truthfully, I was becoming edgy and frustrated. I'm thinking that this is no way for high school students to behave. BeforeI could lose my ool, however, three girls giggled and and emitted somewhat subdued screams which reminded me that these were barely teenagers. Coupled with the situation; been back in school but three weeks, just had a three day weekend and were only 14--15 years old; I recomposed myself and handled them differently. These were mere babies trying to transition from middle school to high school and really didn't know the boundaries yet.

I need a class of freshmen every once in awhile to remind me why I am in the classroom to begin with; to help them find their way in this great journey.
