Subject: A Christmas Memory

All the "feel good" Christmas movies on television caused me to flip back 53 years to remember how I spent the holidays before I met the woman I ultimately married.

Being single, underpaid, and too far from kith and kin to make travel "home" a viable option, I volunteered for the duty over Christmas to permit the married troops to spend that special holiday with their families. Payback was easy; they had to pull duty over New Years so I could party with other singles on that special night of celebration.

By the time I became really serious about that woman I ultimately married and wanted to spend time with her and her family over Christmas, there were enough new single troops in the squadron to allow me to switch my holiday preference. It didn't hurt my cause that by then I had sufficient rank and senority to assure I could influence the duty roster. As "luck" would provide, I usually had enough lower ranking airmen and noncoms in the section to fill the roster for both holidays, releasing me to celebrate them with my lady and her family.
