Alice Joyce (Smith) Donohue Obituary
Joyce died Thursday, September 22nd surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with cancer. She was born to Garrison and Alice (Monterville) Smith on September 17, 1942. She grew up in the Elmwood section of Syracuse with her parents as well as her very special cousin, Thomas Feeney and aunt and uncle, Ida (Montervile) and Harry Feeney. Joyce graduated from Central High School and shortly after met her husband, Edward Donohue Jr. They wed on September 23, 1961. Joyce was involved with many community and church activities while she raised her family. She eventually began working as a secretary in the Guidance Department at Corcoran High School where she touched many lives. After her retirement, Joyce was very active and social enjoying time with her family and traveling with friends and family. She loved spending as much time as she could at her Camp in Cranberry Lake, NY where her family gathered often. After Joyce was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in the Spring of 2013, she was able to receive treatment and was fortunate to have three more years to enjoy with her family and friends. Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Edward D. Donohue Jr.; parents, Garrison and Alice (Monterville) Smith; aunt, Ida (Monterville) Feeney and parents-in-law, Edward and Mary Donohue.
She is survived by her children, Lisa Doerle, Michele (Jeff) Kearney and Edward (Anne Marie) Donohue; grandchildren, Jacob (Melissa) Donohue, Christopher (Amanda) and Margaret Doerle, Alice, Erin and Ellen Kearney and Kevin and Shane Donohue; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Michael, James, McKenna, Lilianna, Chayton and Garrison; cousin, Thomas (Sandy) Feeney and their family; brothers-in-law, James (Marcia) Donohue and William (Liane) Donohue and their families; as well as countless friends.
The family would like to thank all the caregivers along the way that enabled this time, most recently her granddaughter-in-law, Melissa Donohue and HOSPICE of CNY.
Please join us in celebrating her life. Calling hours will be Sunday, September 25th, 2 to 5 p.m. at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, Inc., 4612 S. Salina Street, Syracuse. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Monday, September 26th at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady Of Lourdes Church, 300 Valley Drive, Syracuse. Interment will be at Onondaga Valley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Food Bank of CNY.
