Hi Bolagard,

You throw a lot of red meat out to chew on and digest. You did a great job of debunking the Kennedy legacy regarding diplomacy. That was certainly a false analogy by Nicholas Kristof. And certainly there seems to be a double standard being applied by the anti-enforcement group. On the one hand we can commit air power and troops in Kosovo to stop ethnic cleansing, but we can't use force to enforce established UN and US resolutions to keep Saddam contained.

Notice I said UN and US. A member at another board site did some great research and found a resolution that President Clinton signed in public law in 1998. The title is,
"A joint resolution finding the Government of Iraq in unacceptable and material breach of its international obligations."

You can read the text of the legislation at: Public Law 105-235.

The reason Kennedy proceded with such caution was the involvement of Russia with the Cuban missiles. The irony of the analogy is that it turned out to be a crisis because nuclear weapons were brought to bear. This is exactly what Saddam Hussein is trying to do in the Middle East. So I can't understand why Kristof even used it. But, we both agree that the Cuban Missile Crisis is not a good example.

What I thought was applicable and pertinent was his requirement that to demonstrate the immediacy of the situation. In my mind, the minute Iraq refused to comply with the cease fire requirement of disarmament and inspection created all the immediacy we needed. At that point, it became our option to use whateve force we needed to bring them back into compliance. Much like we should have done with Germany in the 1930's.
