Hi everyone,
I want to bring to your attention an odd story in the NY Times. As usual, let me quote the link so you can see it for yourself:
Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia told President Bush bluntly today that the United States must temper its support for Israel or face grave consequences throughout the Arab world, Saudi officials said.
It then goes on to refute that statement by quoting President Bush, and several Saudi officials. Tonight, a counselor to Saudis, Mr. Al-Jubier, said that the story was off base. He said Saudis were a strong ally and would not use oil as a weapon. They are committed to a reliable affordable source of crude to accommodate the world economy.
The article continues with a bunch of filler material on how much oil the US imports from Saudi Arabia, plus comments on why there was no joint statement. The last line was:
Afterward, the two had a lunch of beef tenderloin, potato salad, brownies and ice cream. The lunch broke up after 3:30 p.m., more than an hour after it was scheduled to end.
It's almost like they had a rumor and needed to work it into a headline. And then all the networks had to play the guessing game, trying to out-guess each other as to the nuances of each word coming from Crawford.
Talk about creating news rather than report it!! Can anyone make sense of this 'news' story?
