I do find disturbing the tendencies and abuses that are going on in the name of protecting our freedoms. Not that I find them unexpected; I noted a long time ago on another forum that if worldwide terrorism becomes enough of a threat, worldwide totalitarianism in response is a very real possibility. (All the more then will it be important to live a good life and not give anyone reason to take offense at you!)

In a way, our present scenario is "deja vu all over again"; similar things were happening in the 1950's in response to the Communist threat. The difference (or one of them) is that our potential "Big Brother" apparatus is so much more sophisticated now.

President Bush said recently: "Freedom is fighting against terror [or fear], and freedom is winning." This was to explain (in effect) why certain freedoms, rightly or wrongly, are being curtailed. How ironic.
