Hi, I have traced most of my line of Clevelands back to Moses. The hardest info to get seems to be more recent. I am a decendant of William (b.1770), his son is Francis (b.1796). Francis is the brother of Richard Falley Cleveland who is the father of Pres. Grover Cleveland. I need info on the children of Francis. I believe one of them to be Mahlen Washington Cleveland b. 1830(the first and middle name may be reversed, I've seen it both ways. I have seen his name mentioned in a newspaper in Omro, Wisconsin. Then he had a son Edward (possibly Appleton, WI) Who had two sons, Edward and Adelbert (my grandfather). Does anyone out there have any info on this line?

I'm also researching this Francis Cleveland, with little luck.

At the moment I have some research done by my great-uncle that shows Francis Cleveland had three wives, and three children.
He married Harriet Stuart (b. 1798 Winchester,VA and d. Oct 1823) and had two children- Francis William (b. 28 Dec 1820 Zanesville, OH, and d. 1852 LA or CA) and Harriet Amanda (b. 19 Jul 1822, Zanesville, OH and d. 1836)
His Second wife was Margaret Waller (b. 30 Mar 1801, Cumberland CO, PA and d. 24 Oct 1848, Portsmouth, OH)-no known children. I've found verification on both of these wives and have a little information on them.
According to family records, his third wife was Martha Dunlap, and she had a son William Henry(b. Oct 1856, Portsmoth Ohio, and d. 5 Dec 1902, Harbor Heights, FL) I'm looking for any information to help verify the parents of William Henry, as he is my ggggrandfather.

My great great grandfather is Washington Mahlen Cleveland who was the son of Francis. By the info you have he must be the son of his second wife Margaret Waller since he was born in 1830.

Actually, William Henry was born in 1856, 8 years after Margaret WALLER died. The only documentation I have that shows Francis CLEVELAND was William Henry's father is a baby book written by William Henry's wife for her grandson. It shows a Martha DUNLAP as William Henry's wife. I was hoping for something to back it up.

Do you have any info on Washington Mahlen's mother? and is he the son of Francis (1796-1881) or his son Francis William (1820-abt 1852)

Oh, wait, my stupid. I mis-understood your message.
I am beginning to wonder if Francis had a bunch of illigitimate children. His first wife (Harriet STUART) is listed as living in New York with who I suspect is Francis's father when she died in 1823, and he didnt marry Margaret WALLER until 1834, and she is listed as dying in 1848.
No marriage for my Martha DUNLAP has been found, just one reference in family books even though at that point in his life he was a well known man in the community.
Washington Mahlen doesnt fit any of the naming patterns I've seen so far, but who knows. Very messy anyway!

It sure sounds messy! The info I have was told to me by my grandfather who was alive and knew Washington Mahlen, so I am fairly sure the info was accurate, in that it didn't go through generations of storytelling yet. My grandfather was pretty sharp up until he passed away just short of his 101st birthday. He lived with us and I remember him telling us about Washington Mahlen being the son of Francis and the first cousin to Grover even when I was very young (4 or 5 years old). He passed away when I was in my twenties. I am sure there was a lot of sleeping around going on back then. Heck Grover had an illegitimate child as well.

I think there are several William Henry Cleveland's and I know there are quite a number of Moses Clevelands. All I have about William Neal Cleveland is that he is brother to President Stephen Grover Cleveland, and was born 7 Apr 1832, died 1906

The William Henry I am researching was born Oct 1856, in Portsmouth Ohio, son of Francis Cleveland (brother of President Cleveland's father) and Martha Dunlap. I'm still trying to find documentation on this marriage. William Henry married Barbara Christina Youngman and moved to Florida. He had 7 sons and died 5 Dec 1902 in Harbor Heights Florida. Let me know if this is the William Henry you're looking for, I've got over 150 decendants for him.

I have done some research on the presidents. The information I have on William Neal Cleveland is that he was born on Apr. 7, 1832 in Windham, CT & died on Jan. 15, 1906. He married Anita Marie Thomas in 1860. She was born in 1835 & died 1898. They had 3 kids, only 1 of whom survived infancy. William Neal Cleveland, born in 1860, married Katherine Hepburn in 1892. She was born in 1862 & they had 3 children. Anita Thomas was also married once before she married William. If you would like any more information I can see what else I might have.
