Ephraim Cleveland was born on Feb. 3, 1711 in Canterbury, Conn. the child of Joseph and Abigail who later settled in Dedham, Norfolk Co. MA. Ephraim first married Abigail Curtis, then Ruth Nichols who both died during a flu epidemic. Rev. Samuel Dexter arranged his marriage to widowed Hannah Paige (Hayward) Nov 1738. They purchased a farm in Old Bridgewater, and was listed on a census as a saddler. He later attained the position of Legal Accessor in Hardwick, MA., appointed to the Committee of Correspondence, enlisted around 1760 and was commissioned as 1st Lt. on July 1, 1775, mustered with the Knowlton's Rangers with Capt. Gould's company, and Col Paul D. "Serjents" Regiment on 1 Aug. 1775. General Orders, 29 Sept. 1776, Head Quarters, Harlem Heights, General Court Marshal Hearing record Lt. Cleveland's testimony.
