I'm trying to research my cleveland family tree. My Great Grandmother was a Hemphill who married a Godby. My Great Grandmother was Zona Irene Hemphill (Birdie) her mothers maiden name was Cleveland. She married a Hemphill and had my Great Grandmother. We were always told growing up that we were related to President Grover Cleveland through this relation. That he and my Great Grandmother were Cousins. My Grandfather was named after the Clevelands. He was named David Cleveland Godby. The Clevelands and the Hemphills moved to Texas from either Georgia or Missippi and settled in Bastrop County, Texas. Anyone who could help me with this missing link of my Cleveland line would be greatly appreciated. Any information on Clevelands in Texas would be appreciated too. Thank you,

Cheryl Bonner

If your CLEVELAND connection IS through the family of President Grover CLEVELAND, you need to be looking at the northern CLEVELANDS, not the southern CLEVELANDS. This branch of the family traces back to Moses CLEVELAND, who originally immigrated to New England in the 1600s. My line is through Francis CLEVELAND, the uncle of President Grover CLEVELAND, but I dont recognize any of the names you have here. Do you know anything more on your grandmother CLEVELAND such as her given name?

Funny, but my family lore was always that we were related to the President Grover Cleveland line. Nobody knew the name of the Cleveland ancestor. But, I have since discovered that ancestor was Harriet Cleveland of Mobile, AL or Franklin, GA. She is definitely of the southern line and not the northern. I wonder how many other southern families out there have folklore that they are related to President Cleveland. Of course, it appears the southern line and nothern line must be related, so I guess technically it is true that the southern line is related to president Cleveland.
