I have come across a document in George Washington's Tithables that states "Alexander Cleveland replaced James Cleveland as overseer of the River farm in Fairfax Parish".
To view this document you will need to go to "The Papers of George Washington" on http://gwpapers.virginia.edu then do a search for Alexander Cleveland. What prompted me to do this search is the proximity and time of Alexander in relation to George Washington in the Fairfax, VA area. So, I thought I would do a search to see if George Washington mentions Alexander Cleveland at all. I find this a very intriguing bit of info. Does this mean that the Alexander Cleveland and James worked for George Washington? If so, which Alexander and which James do you think it was that worked for him?

Valerie,

James Cleveland b ca 1740 and Alexander Cleveland III b 1742 were the sons of Alexander, Jr. and Margaret Doolittle Cleveland. Alexander Cleveland, Sr., and Mary unknown were the parents of Alexander Cleveland, Jr. I have no info on James. His brother Alexander married twice and had a large family. It does appear that these two Clevelands were the overseers of one of Washington's many plantations. Amazing the things that turn up, isn't it. Good Work!
