I have 3 William Earl(s) Cleveland’s in my CLEVELAND file........all 3 are closely connected to my direct line of Cleveland’s. It has been hard for me to keep information on these men straight because although they were of different ages, they all have lived in Murray Co. GA in some of the same census years. If the following information is not accurate, I ask the descendants of these men to please contact me so I can make corrections. I would also appreciate adding information that I may not have and will share what I have with others.

FIRST WILLIAM EARL(s) CLEVELAND
William Earles Cleveland b. 05 Feb 1827 at Tugaloo, Cleveland's Ferry SC m. Matilda L. Anderson . William Earles Cleveland s/o George Alexander Columbus Cleveland b. 05 Mar 1790 & Nancy Cleveland b. 27 May 1800.
Children:
William b. 1849
Nancy Elizabeth 1850
James A. 1852
George Washington 1854
Walter 1856

1850 census Murray Co. GA
1860 census unable to find this couple in any census
Died abt. 1895 in Denton, Texas

This information was sent to me on February 15, 2002 by one of his descendants.
William Earles Cleveland and Matilda Anderson moved to Galveston, Texas after the Civil War and had 3 sons.

William Earl Cleveland, was a Capt. E Co. 60th Ga. Regt. Inf. - enlisted 9/19/1861. Capt. Beck's Co. Bartow Avengers. This Co. consolidated with Col Stiles Regt. and served for year in Savannah, Ga.

In June of 1862 60th became part of Lawton-Gordon-Evans Brigade the largest brigade in ANVA because of an extra Regt. This was an elite outfit and was sent to Va. in June of 1862 just prior to 7 days battles around Richmond. They became fourth brigade of Stonewall Jackson Division. They arrived by train at Staunton, Va. and were immediately turned around and marched to Richmond area.

First battle was at Gaines Mill, then Malvern Hill. Wm. E. was wounded Aug. 29 in 2nd battle of Manassas and sent to Richmond hosp. - rec'v 30 day furlough and was back with unit in early Nov. Wounded at Fredericksburg in Dec. 1862. Back with unit in 1863 in Jan. Served thru Chancellorsville although divi. was at Fredericksburg part of battle. Gettysburg, Monocacy, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor - in the valley campaign until battle of Winchester Sept. 19, 1864 where he was shot in left arm and left hip and left in enemy line.

First in U.S. field hosp. and then to West's Hosp. Baltimore, Md. to Ft. McHenry to Ft. Delaware - released June 19, 1865 on taking oath (biting the dog) walked home from Ft. Delaware - took him almost three months. When he got home there was no one there -- he finally found the family over in Hart Co. and went there. Incredible. ( I am Florida Division Registrar, UDC - and am saturated with CSA history) My grandfather had 8 brothers and all of them served in CSA units. (Vining)
He was first 3rd Lt. then 2nd and lst and Capt. in 1863.

Others who served in same Co. were:

Neal Cleveland - John. O. Cleveland
[this was John O’Neil Cleveland b. 04 Dec 1844 in Murray Co. GA s/o Thomas Calaway Cleveland and Elizabeth Carolyn Cleveland.]
He was called “Neal or Neil” and was a Pvt. Who enlisted 9/16/1861 - he was wounded at 2nd Manasas Aug. 1862 and was killed at Winchester, Va. 6/15/1863.

Thomas Cleveland Pvt. enl. 9-16-1861 discharged because of disability 12/12/1861.

[Thomas Callaway Cleveland who at age 54 enlisted in the Confederate Army with his son David Dumas Cleveland (my Great Grandfather) who was age 21 at the time. Thomas enlisted as a Private in 1861 (at the age of 54) Thomas received a medical discharge a few months later, and the discharge papers describe him as being 6 ft. 3 inches tall, with black hair, grey eyes, and a florid (I believe this means a "ruddy") complexion.] David Dumas Cleveland served 4 years and returned home unharmed and lived to be over 90 years of age. Thomas had 6 sons who served in the Civil War, one of those died. Thomas & Elizabeth Cleveland lived in Murray Co. GA but took refuge in Taylor Co. GA where Thomas died in 1864 before his sons returned home.
