Disorganization is a part of dyslexia. My son just turned 12 has dyslexia and dysgraphia and is very disorganized...but he's getting better. He too has an IEP and one of his goals is geared towards organization. The goal is "he will use organizational strategies with 90% accuracy in order to improve his ability to stay organized during the school day as measured by classroom observation/checklist. Objective 1 He will use a pre-made list for his material for each student day and for each class. Obective 2 He will maintain an agenda book documenting homework for each class." Now...I made a checklist which I have posted in his room which states..."
A DAY
LA & MATH
Social Studies
PE/Health--Gym Cloths
Reading
B DAY
LA/Math
Science
Art/Music
Reading
Do you have your homework---CHECK
Do you have your gym clothes--A Day--CHECK
Is you homework/agenda book signed by parent--CHECK
PUT EVERTHING BY DOOR SO YOU ARE READY TO LEAVE IN AM

I do still help him with this. Not all of his teachers write in his agenda book like they are supposed to but it does help. His LA and Math teach write in it everyday and I sign it everyday.

I would demand it be included in her IEP. It is not her fault. My son was actually diagnosed with executive dysfunction as well as dyslexia and dysgraphia. Executive disfunction is the disorganization piece. She needs to learn different strategies for staying organized and she needs to start now so that she will be successful in the future. The school really doesn't ahve to do a lot of work with this but you as her parent do. You have to use the list at home like the one I have above and you need to help her with it until she becomes accustomed to doing it on her own. The list will also help you to remember also.

The teachers need to be made aware of this problem and need to communicate with you about not turning in homework. Try to stay in contact with them via email if possible.

Maybe you can even request a conference with all of her teachers and express your concern to them and ask them to help you and your daughter come up with ways to keep her organized. Also, this would be good so that she is not penalized for her disorganization and everyone can work on this together.

Here are some links that talk about dyslexia and disorganization. Print them out and take them to her school to show thatm that its not her fault and that she needs to learn how to be organized.
