Hi! I understand your confusion about dyslexia.

After 40-some years in education - mostly with moderately challenged students, after copious amounts of reading, observing, and intervening, it is clear to me that the "differences" in children who struggle at school are unique and neuro-physiological. Sometimes the problem is a visual anomaly. Sometimes it's auditory processing. Sometimes (and no one has acknowledged this yet) it is linked to "hyper-mobility" of joints (aka "double-jointedness").

For the past ten years or so I have been trying to draw attention to the fact that ALL my clients share a common trait - they all have "mixed lateral dominance". This is a very simple indicator of unique "brain-wiring" for all kinds of processing.

Once we recognize that NOT ALL children are identical at source, we MIGHT begin to recognize that there is a basic design flaw in our concept of schooling. We have all this tremendous new medical research that indicates a huge range of human variability, but we are STILL trying to fit everyone into the same old model of "bright" and "dull".
Very few teachers can recognize potential genius in a child who cannot read at age six, and still fewer are willing to credit the artistic or athletic child whose skills excel in "non-academic" areas.

The entire system needs to be re-designed to accommodate new knowledge. But educational institutions are huge bureaucracies and cannot easily be dismantled.

Keep reading. Particularly look at MRI research findings. Draw your own conclusions based on the child you know better than anyone else. LOVE your child. And never, ever, take schooling too seriously.

Education is critical; schooling, much less so...

Translate "dyslexic" simply to mean "neuro-physiologically unique". Dyslexics are often creative, innovative thinkers who include all the genius types among us. Never forget that!

(I'm just back from China - fascinating place where LD is not recognized, but the "symptoms" I've mentioned above are the same. I return there in late August and will not be able to access this thread from that country. But e-mail contact is possible.)
