Hi Karen,

Please consider taking your son to a developmental optometrist for an evaluation of his vision skills. It's quite likely that his eyes aren't functioning well together (even though he might have 20/20 vision) and that this is the main reason he doesn't like to read, or is having difficulty learning to read.

I've worked with over 200 kids as a phonics instructor and have found that most dyslexics I've encountered have undiagnosed (and untreated) vision deficits. You can read more of this at my website at OnTrack Reading (ontrackreading.com). In particular, take a look at the section titled The Vision Piece. Once on that page you'll also find a link to a Vision Assessment Checklist that might be helpful. Another good site for learning more is childrensvision.com. There's a link to that on my website as well (down under the blogroll on the sidebar.)

Hope this is of some help. I post this same message from time to time in here because many parents come here with essentially the same problem, but have heard nothing about vision problems of the sort experienced by many of the children I work with.
