My son was diagnosed with moderate to severe dyslexia in May of 2008. The public school system said don't worry, your son will have a 504 plan and get all the help he needs at school. I was finally able to get everyone together in Nov. 2008 to put our recommendations onto paper. Everything the specialist had recommended, the teacher and principle shot down. At the end of the meeting, they made it clear they did not want him using his dyslexia as a crutch. I was so upset I was ready to pull him out of school. I didn't though, and have been waiting to sign his 504 plan because they have not felt it was very important or I wouldn't have to keep asking about it. As of Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, I pulled my son out of school and will be homeschooling. At 7, his frustration and low self esteem issues had began to concern me. From the time he gets home from school till bedtime, he is almost unbearable. I asked for help from the school but, they go back to not wanting him to use his LD as a crutch. I almost feel he is being punished for having dyslexia. When I felt he should be able to take a break from math problems when he's having trouble concentrating, the teacher was unwilling to even come up with a solution, other than keeping him in for recesses until he finished it. When trying to explain what I have learned about dyslexia, how children learn coping skills which may seem he's being defiant, I have had no cooperation except from his teacher last year and the reading teacher. I too, do not have alot of patience when it comes to trying to teach my son, but I feel I can't make him feel any worse than he already does. I have ordered the Barton reading method and will continue on with levels 3-10. He had already completed levels 1 and 2 at school. I feel the program has helped him alot. I wouldn't say he wasn't learning anything at school, but not enough to have to keep him there. The lack of communication and support is unexcusable. I figure I can try homeschooling for a year and if it doesn't work, I can send him back to school.
