I live in Minnesota. My daughter was at the end of 5th grade before she was diagnosed. We had been asking the school for 3 years to please, test her. Over and over we heard the same comments, "We don't test for dyslexia", "It won't change her IEP", "It's just reversal of letters and she has more issues than that", etc. We DID find a wonderful facility an hour away that tested children for dyslexia. Finally, we told the school we'd had enough, and since they had forced us to look out of the district for help, that we expected them to pay the cost of her testing...guess what?!?! They DID! And she came back as severely dyslexic.
The facility gave us a list of guidelines and accommodations that the school should be making. I was flabbergasted when her IEP team decided to include all the information as PART of her IEP! Now they couldn't say no to us anymore. They HAD to follow the written information!
Things have improved for her drastically at school. I was so worried about High School, but she is now a Sophomore and getting mostly A's and B's. We still struggle a lot with emotional and behavior problems associated with her fear of being different and of failure.
I am recommending to anyone that is not getting help through their school district, to demand the help. In Minnesota, the group to call is PACER (Parent Advocacy Coalition for Educational Rights). Find out what the group is in your area and get your child the help they need, without having to cover all the costs of doing it on your own. It helps!
