My 12 yo son is dyslexic, dysgraphic, had written expression disorder and executive dysfunction. He was also found to have auditory processing disorder as well which is common with dyslexia also. What was explained to me by the staff at Kennedy Kreiger in Baltimore MD was that my sons corpus collosum is not fully matured. When you hear something it comes into the right side of the brain, is transfered to the left side of the brain through the corpus collosum and interpreted in the left side of the brain also. But, if the corpus collosum is inmature or shaped differently, which is common in children with dyslexia also, the child misinterprets what he hears. This is why they have trouble following directions, completing homework assignments given via oral directions and seem like they are daydreaming or have ADD. The child is having so much trouble trying to figure out exactly what he is supposed to do that they seem like they are not listening or daydreaming when they are actually trying to process what they are going to do or how they are going to answer the question. My sons teacher used to tell me that my son also took a while to get started but once he got started he was fine and did a great job. I know know why. Also, my sons school won't mention the word dyslexia in his IEP, they used Reading-General Processes (Phonics-Decoding). My son is taking Concerta 18mg, the lowest dose available, to help him with his concentratrion for reading. The words jump on the page which frustrates him. I was very resistant to medication also, The psychologist told me to try him on the Concerta for concentration only and that if it did not work, DO NOT INCREASE IT. But the 18mg has been working and he is very greatful for it. I only give it on school days. He has made him happier and made it so he can focus. He is not ADD and it is nowhere in his IEP or school records. Hope this helps.
