's message, "Should my child be tested for dyslexia" on 08:34:46 03/09/09 Mon
Your son's dyslexic symptoms seem exactly the same as me when I attended grammar school 55 years ago. Back then they did not know much about dyslexia so I went through many years of feeling insecure and inadequate because of my lack of spelling deficiency. I was properly tested 13 years ago. Today schools are aware of many learning disabilities and are able to help children that need the attention yours does. It is extremely important that your son be tested as soon as possible to be protected by the AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT. Once he certified as being dyslexic, he will be afforded many advantages that will help him cope with the particular problems he has with being dyslexic. That protection will follow him throughout his life in many ways, particularly when he’s employed. He could never be discriminated against because of his dyslexia once he’s been tested and certified.
Presently, I use a word recognition program that transfers my speech in to text on a computer so spelling is no longer a concern when I need to communicate with people with the computer.
Good luck,
Bob
