Does your child have a report written by a certified clinical physiologist? That might help your child's school district to come to their senses. If your school district offers Chinese as a language, take that! Dyslexics tend to do great with it, because its symbol based. If not, take Spanish at the lowest level possible...I got through it with a C and a lot of studying.
I wasn't diagnosed with dyslexia until I was in college...I don't think I was ever diagnosed earlier because I was a good student, I did my homework and tried hard. My teachers always felt bad because they saw the effort, and I ended up with good grades. In middle/high school I struggled with language and math. When I was diagnosed my report said that it was virtually impossible for me to learn another language, and now I don't have to take language at college. Instead, I take a "cultural awareness" class. I also get time and a half on my tests.
I think it's important to not make a big deal about being dyslexic to your child. I think I'm so successful because I didn't really know the difference and I wanted to do well like my friends were. I always had issues with self esteem and my school work (which turns out to be attributed to dyslexia) and this sort of helped me, because I tried even harder so I wouldn’t feel so bad.
I sometimes get angry at my parents for never noticing my struggles…and never realizing something was wrong. They were very apprehensive when I went to get tested, telling me I was wasting time (and $$, testing is expensive !!) but in a way it's a blessing because If I knew when I was younger I would have been put in a special ed program...that would have been the end of my educational advancement.
