I think it's just as important to reading to children. It improves their listening skills, broadens their vocabulary and just helps them associate reading with pleasure! If you are enjoying it then the children will notice this. If you’re not a confident reader, you can still help children by talking about the pictures and making up a story to go with them. If you don’t like reading aloud, story tapes can do the job for you. You can borrow story tape and book packs from the library.

Also, shared reading is very useful in providing a model for children to learn from. You can encourage children to participate in lots of ways.
Make sure you are both comfortable and relaxed at the start and take it in turns to read a sentence or a page.
Use different voices for the characters, you be one character and encourage your child to be another.
Check they understand the story by asking them questions about what happens - not after every page otherwise it gets tediuos but now and then." What would you have done if you were…?” “Can you guess what is going to happen next?”
Pause at certain words and ask your child to suggest a word that could fit.

Just spending time dipping in and out of a simple child’s dictionary and reading new and unfamiliar words is also invaluable. For an intelligent child with or without dyslexia it is important to open their minds and really enjoy words for their own sake.
