I so agree with Penny. I think that reading can sometimes feel like a chore because we get tired at the end of the day etc etc. But if a child knows that you will read to them at the end of the day, something they enjoy, you snuggle up together and make it a warm and positive experience they will remember it for the rest of their lives. Children who are having problems need this kind of experience and if they are not ready to share the reading then maybe just keep on reading every single night or take Saturday nights off. But keep it reliable they need to know they will be read to or they will lose faith it the experience. Follow it up with a story tape which is not too difficult for them to understand and their language skills will be enhanced and they will learn to enjoy the experience. They will associate the positive experience of being read to with reading itself and this will foster their enthusiasm for it.
