Your 9-year-old son sounds like my 9-year-old daughter. Although she is grade levels ahead in most subjects, she is well behind in spelling. She can breeze through every word on her list with no errors. The next day, she can barely spell her name. At this point, we are opting NOT to have her tested. However, our situtation is different.
She is homeschooled, and our state does not require standardized testing for homeschool students. Therefore, she would not benefit from extra time on a test she isn't taking. As her teacher, I am already educating myself and taking steps to address her needs specifically. Her doctor is aware of the situation and agrees that while it is obvious that she is dyslexic, testing will provide no additional benefit FOR HER. If we need to do so later (college entrance exams, change in law, etc), we can always have her tested.
We are just starting a new spelling program called "All About Spelling" which is supposed to work very well for dyslexics. In fact, tonight I am ordering a new set for her younger sister who will be starting first grade. She is manifesting the same signs so we are hoping to nip this in the bud early.
