I am 38 years old. I can't do math to save your life. Purple is the only color i can read off of and I just started looking for books online for this problem.
I have spent god knows how much money in the past looking for a handle on this.
I think I found a book that will finally get it done for me. "Teaching maths to pupils with different learning styles"
I'm a visual learner. I have always tested high in reading comprehension but in the cellar when it comes to math.
I print because it is easier for me not to reverse those letters though it still happends. I found out about changing the color of what I read one day by looking at some one else using colored transparent page sized plastic.
I learn best by doing a-z. I can repeat conversation verbatim. Colors like yellow or orange look great on flowers but not on paper I'm trying to read from. Red is impossible for me. Black and white doesn't work, the words become ants and walk off the page. Purple transparancies change the back ground to black words purple letters.
Thats my color, I can read anything with that color.
Math is just stupid squiggle. It means nothing. For me to remember it I need a visual example I can connect to the numbers. 4 or 1 1 1 1= 4.
I remember the confusion in grade school I had. No one worked with me. Junior High, 7nth grade I tested 11th grade reading comprehension, grade school math.
They will test test test. Even now there are certain words I key off on because of all the crap I had to deal with in the past. Special Needs Student just enforces to me that I'm stupid. That will also affect your kids desire to find another way. She will get to where she wont even try.
The other problem is, its not always broken. Even now I can buy something in one store and know exactly what I have coming in change walk across the street buy something else and I'm at the mercy of the cashier.
My experience with EDUCATORS is they're not. unless you get lucky your child will have the floor opened up on her and she will " slip through the cracks" I always loved that one. Not all teachers are joke. But in my biased from experience opinion, most of 'em are a joke.
The flip side. I can see human physiololgy working in my head. Once I read it it stays in there.
Science and History I never had problems with.
Mathematics and the written language I still have problems with.
Go to Barnes and Noble and look up texts to buy to help your child. "They" wont fight for her as hard as you would.
