We make up flash cards. One card will have the word, the other card a definition. My son (who is now in 6th grade and still does this)likes to throw the cards up in the air and match them up on the floor. It's makes it fun for him. I will also make mock tests with the words on one column and the definition on the other column, and he has to match them up. This helps me determine how much more practice he needs. Plus, throughout the evenings, I'll catch him off guard and throw a word he's having trouble with at him (not literally) to see if he remembers the definition. Hope some of this helps.
