In my experience going back to 1955 in big and small prinshops in New Zealand, some did have an individual fumes extractor over over metal pot - but most did not and relied on the very high ceilings and a central extractor fan in the roof.
The exposure of workers to lead fumes was taken seriously here (although I know of only one Linotype operator who had to leave the trade through lead poisoning - it was his own fault: smoking, eating without washing etc.) - every six months a public health nurse would call and take blood samples for testing. As well, the workers on the big re-melt furnaces and Elrod/Monotype casters and stereo half-plate casters all received a pint of milk a day to help offset lead inhalation risks.
