I am sure most linecaster operators have been asked why Ottmar Mergenthaler designed the layout of his keyboard in the way he did and did not use the typewriter which was in use before his Linotype machine appeared.
The reason was very simple: because there was a limited number of matrices in the channels for vowel letters - it was essential for these letters to be returned to the magazine quickly, hence the first two rows downward were:
ETAOIN and SHRDLU - the most frequently-used letters!
