Subject: Question regarding judging

Hi, new mom to Irish step dancing here, daughter is in Beginner--how can some feis have judging ranking the dancers 1 through 10 and other competitions the judges give the same 10 girls 3 first places, 4 seconds, and 3 thirds? How can there be so many ties? Is this just the style of the judge? I am not sure I am phrasing the question right, but how can one know ahead of time if a feis will judge with no place lower than third or not?
Thank you for reading.

[> It's the discretion of the judge. Some judges would rather tie for just 1, 2 or 3 so the child doesn't get discouraged at an early age (especially beginner). You will learn through the years that results are very subjective. Enjoy!! -- No name, 15:01:58 08/13/17 Sun (c-73-174-167-5.hsd1.pa.comcast.net/

[> Award percentage -- An AD, 18:59:07 08/15/17 Tue (c-73-190-92-113.hsd1.or.comcast.net/

Most Feiseanna have a plan for the % of dancers to receive awards, 40-50% is typical. Lower shares are sometimes used. In some regions, Only 1st, 2nd and 3rd places are used, even if 10 dancers are getting awards. AD's from those regions are accustomed to tiieing 1st-3rd. In other regions, 4th, 5th and lower awards are used. In most Mid-America feiseanna, the placements and the ties are at the lower levels. In Mid-Am, most tabulating companies are going to identify which are the top scores to hit the feis-defined award %. See if this explanation fits your experience. Alternatively, it is quite possible that a judge just wanted those dancers tied at those levels.

[> Definitely at the judge's discretion (though I think some feiseanna give direction to place through 5th or just 3rd), and more common to see ties at the top in the beginner levels. If you're wondering before a feis, you could check results from the year prior for that feis to see if there's a pattern being encouraged by the feis vs. just the judge's preference. Happy feising & hope your DD loves it! -- No name, 00:28:28 08/18/17 Fri (c-24-91-35-161.hsd1.ma.comcast.net/

[> When DD was U11, she struggled to get out of Novice in SJ. Placed, but couldn't get 1st she needed to be all PW & a shot at qualifying for Oireachtas. When she did get 1st, it was a 2-way tie. Only tie in the comp, but she felt like it wasn't a true win if someone else got the same thing. LOL, the mind of kids! Explained the judge probably felt they were both so good she couldn't choose one over the other & to take it. A 1st is a 1st! She got 3rd in PW two weeks later & went to the 'O.' -- Ties do happen.
