There is a lot to be said for teaching kids to be gracious, open-hearted competitors. That means you think about other dancers and want to give every dancer a fair competition. If you already have the firsts you need, move up. If you can’t do it for the sake of good sportsmanship, then do it for the sake of promoting goodwill towards your school.

In grades, my DD spent an entire year in PW competing against a dancer who was on the podium at the O. This girl won every PW competition she did that year but her teacher would not move her up. No one in our area could get of PW because this championship-level dancer had a teacher who won’t move dancers up. I don’t think that teacher knows how much ill will this policy generates with dancers and parents at other schools.

And at the end of the day, the parent isn't doing their kid any favors in terms of life lessons. Will be interesting to see how the trophy hunters fare after dance...

Sometimes the dancer and family are at the mercy of the school policy. not every school views moving up immediately as a positive thing for the long term growth/development of a child - staying in for a calendar year is sometimes viewed as the right thing to do, regardless of placements. If they don't move up each calendar year, then I think it truly becomes an issue- but consider the above before you trash a family for bad parenting.

our experiences have all been parent driven with the parents being very vocal about sitting their kid in PC to collect.
