Subject: Concerned about Oireachtas

Really not trying to start drama, but with COVID cases on the rise, is it wise to hold oireachtas right now? My mother is a physician who has treated COVID patients and our family has decided to boycott the MWO this year. We firmly believe that it is deeply irresponsible to hold it this year. Beyond the fatality rate, COVID can also cause long-term health issues. Even while asymptomatic, you can still spread the virus and potentially devastate more vulnerable populations (common comorbidities such as diabetes, obesity, and asthma are linked to poorer outcomes). I'm sure that you all will make the best choices for your families, but we will be boycotting the MWO this year for its reckless endangerment of the lives of dancers, their families, and teaching staff.

I know we are all adults making these decisions for our kids but it really puts people in a tough place to forge ahead during these times. Not a fair chance for those that can't come bc they would be required to quarantine when they return, or can't attend bc of family health concerns. I could go on and on....

These kids need a venue for safe, healthy, activity. The committee has gone above and beyond to create a safe event. It's not controlled sports activities, where masks and social distancing rules are incorporated and followed, causing the spread of the virus.

The event will not be the same, we will not be able to celebrate and enjoy each others company the way we have in the past, but we can safely allow these dancers to compete.

We are currently in remote learning. My child has been limited leasing into Oireachtas for the health and safety of her dance school and friends. When she is at dance, she practices safely, in a mask, small group and distanced. When we attend Oireachtas it will be 2 of us traveling. Again, in masks. We will likely Uber food, or curbside pickup, similar to what we do at home. My dancer will compete, we will return home, and quarantine from dance, school is already on line, for 2 weeks. What exactly are we spreading?? Our money? Time? Love of dance?

[> [> I normally subscribe to the “You do you and we will do us” mentality. But in a pandemic where community spread affects ALL, it’s ridiculous to say “respect our decision”. Your decision impacts others and could kill others. It is a tough decision to make, no mater what side. We need to make the decision for our family and be mindful of others and not pass judgement on what they decide on. I have been to two Feis'since July and have felt that both organizations had done a great job keeping people safe and that there were no known cases or outbreaks resulting from the events. I feel safe going with the regulations and guidlines, but I can understand and respect those who feel otherwise.

[> Here is the problem with this “you do you but we are going it will be safe”. It is not safe. This virus is dangerous to a lot of people. And while you and your dance may be fine, others you spread it to may not be. It sickens me to think an event of this size will be going on. It is wrong and extremely selfish of those who are willing to participate. -- A non selfish parent., 06:01:40 11/04/20 Wed (pool-98-118-125-209.bstnma.fios.verizon.net/98.118.125.209)

Those who are planning to attend are exactly what is wrong with this country and why we can’t get this virus under control. Have an O is more important then getting any control over this virus and the sense of normalcy that would come with this.

[> [> The thing is, the Oireachtas as we know it is NOT taking place... this year's event will be much different. -- old timer, 16:59:31 11/06/20 Fri (pool-173-71-180-190.pitbpa.fios.verizon.net/173.71.180.190)

My family plans to attend, with our 2 dancers and 2 parents total. For us, there will be zero socializing with others. Dancers will be brought to the halls with their 1 adult in pods (I'm guessing around 30 at a time, like the number check group size). These ballrooms are huge amounts of space (both volume and square footage) so we'll have excellent air flow. There is no reason for my dancers to come in direct physical contact with another dancer or teacher. We will all be wearing masks. No celebrating with friends at awards ceremonies. No group practice sessions the night before or morning of; everything will be done in solitude with our family unit.

My family has erred on the side of caution for all of this; we believe in science. We have quarantined when instructed and will need to quarantine when we get home from the O. We wear masks. My children attend virtual school. Their only contact with friends is at dance or other closely monitored activities, with mask and social distancing protocols in place.

This virus is not going away in 2020 and maybe not even in 2021. While I do not wish to spread the virus, I do not think it is healthy for teens (or humans of any age) to be completely isolated for 6, 9, 12, 18 months?!?! Or however long this is going to continue. Our family has decided to move ahead with any activity we can safely participate in, and the 2020 Oireachtas will be one of them.

I also respect the concerns of others and understand some of us are willing to take more risk than others. I do think Americans have been pretty selfish and greedy about alot of things and I worry about our path with this virus, but in the end have to do what I feel is best for my family. As do you!

I normally do not post to specifically disagree with others on this board. But I think its important that not only the voices of those who want the event cancelled to be heard. Many of us are very comfortable with the pre-cautions put in place by the organizers.

Families traveling to Indy from all over the Midwest will in-doubtably add to community spread. Now that Worlds is delayed I don’t understand the rush to get this event in.

[> So if your state is on the Marion County's recommended quarantine list, are you going to abide by their wishes or disregard their request to keep their county safe? The quarantine is for Marion County residents. You do not have to quarantine to go to Marion County BUT you might have to quarantine after coming home from Indy depending on the restrictions in the county in which you reside.
After traveling to a state which has experienced at least 300 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people in the previous two-week period as of the time of travel, Marion County residents should observe a quarantine period of 14 days, during which they remain in their homes and do not come into close contact with any person outside of their household.
