Its not 'the real you' that lives in your head on treatment. Its like that silly commercial with the fried egg, "This is your brain on drugs..." We should do one of our own:

"This is your brain."

"This is your brain on interferon." [insert your favorite image of drooling, growling or snarling insanity]

Try not to take what you are feeling to heart or give it power by accepting it as 'real.' Psychiatric side effects of treatment are kind of like a bad acid trip. "Its only a trip." When the trip is over, effects of the drug wear off and you get to be you again.

You will be you again when the treatment experience is over.

Reminds me of a long ago conversation with my doctor. He says, "How are you feeling?" [I says to myself, "Like a psychotic gerbil on coke...."] I says to him, "Fine." I was not fine. I was bound and determined not to be taken off treatment. So, I was secretly crazy for awhile. I got over being crazy when treatment was over -- and the dragon is dead. I am a sustained responder undetected since 9/98.

Ask for and use prescriptions for whatever medications work to make treatment easier for you -- antidepressants for depression, Fiorinal or Fiorcet for interferon migraines, Ambien for insomnia. Do not suffer side effects it is not necessary to suffer (including psychiatric side effects). Treat what can be treated; steel yourself and endure what cannot be treated. The bottom line is this:

If you have to walk on hot coals to slay the dragon and be done with this -- grit your teeth and walk on 'em. Life after treatment, life without the virus, is worth every miserable minute of it!
