Mike, My Mike, you poor uneducated one. The 165th was captured in great numbers at Mansfield La. The old quote was a Confederate upon seeing the baggy pants and such remarked how the war must nearly over as Uncle Abe was drafting women to fight.
If you look at alot of the prison rolls for the camps, you shall discover men from the eastern threatre of war. Alot of these men were on detached duty from their regt's and were captured one or two at at a time. For example there on the roster is a man from the 20th Maine Infantry, at Camp Ford. He was on detached duty on a steamer when they surrendered.
Also some of the men of the west where likewise captured in the east.
To further confuse matters alot of men when released from a prison camp where exchanged in far away places. The Texas 6th was orginally captured in Arkansas but were released in Virginia. They served in the trenches for awhile outside of Richmond before returning to the AOT.
Alot of the 19th Corps (The New England Reg'ts), served with the Army of the Gulf, The Army of the Potomac and finally in the valley with Sheridan. This is where my Great Grandfather was captured by Mosby while escorting a wagon train. Orgianlly listed as "deserted to the enemy" later changed to captured and exchanged in Jan 1865.
