Mike, Been doing some research on how men could have been captured at Port Hudson and may have an idead?
In the middle of June Gen'l Taylor collected at Shreveport a small army of roughly 9 thousand men. They were divided into three "wings" Col James P. Major a dashing cava;ry officer, Gen's Mouton ad Green with infantry. During the second week of June 1863 they made a bold dash in the rear and oppisite of Port Hudson, driving in the pickets, striking the town of Plaquemine of the Mississippi, capturing the garrison, destroying steamers, they swung around Donaldsonville and swung around the platation area gobbling up small groups of men. There were later assaults upon Lafourche and Brashear, and Berwick Bay. Fianlly reenforcements from New Orleans themselves drove back the raiders. prehaps this is how some of the 165th SNY ended up captured outside the lines...Dusty
