ACT IV

Scene: Spike’s Crypt [Int.], Night
The door to SPIKE’s crypt bursts open. SPIKE looks up from where he is sitting, on the floor, leaning against the far wall. DAWN is standing in the doorway, clutching a stake. She walks in.

DAWN
I want to know.

SPIKE is shaking. He doesn’t get up.

SPIKE
You have to go.

DAWN
[ignores him]
I want to know why you didn’t feel any pain.
Why the chip didn’t activate. And I want to
know where you went over the Summer.

SPIKE
[still shaking]
You have to go, now. Get out of here.
Please. Just go, please.

DAWN
No. You’re going to tell me.

SPIKE jumps to his feet in rage, besides himself.

SPIKE
GET OUT OF HERE!

DAWN
[screaming]
NO!

DAWN throws the stake at SPIKE. SPIKE knocks it aside in the air, and lunges at DAWN, grabbing her by the throat and pushing her against the wall.

SPIKE
GET OUT!

DAWN is calmer. She doesn’t even seem that frightened.

DAWN
No pain. Why?

SPIKE looks at Dawn’s neck. He can see the blood pumping through her arteries beneath her flesh, just as he did in his nightmare. He fixates on her neck, moving in closer…

SPIKE suddenly releases DAWN, throwing himself off of her, and spins around, closing his eyes in fear and anxiety, scared at what he just did and what he might do.

SPIKE
[Gritting his teeth, trying to control himself]
Just go.

DAWN
[calmly]
Look at me.

SPIKE
No.

DAWN
Look at me!

The pounding and pulsation of blood inside SPIKE’s head starts again. We hear as he hears DAWN’s heart beat, deafeningly.

Slowly, gradually, SPIKE starts to turn around.

The pounding grows louder.

SPIKE continues to turn.

The pounding quickens.

SPIKE turns to face DAWN.

A look of morbid horror consumes him.

DAWN is standing in front of him, but she is covered completely in blood. She is dripping in it, her face and skin red, her features indistinguishable, just a silhouette of red, as though she had bathed in blood. Her hair and clothes are sodden with it, all SPIKE can make out are her eyes.

SPIKE throws himself back in revulsion and fear, landing on the floor.

SPIKE
Oh god!

The pounding grows louder and much, much faster. It is so deafening that it might be SPIKE’s own heart if it still beat.

DAWN approaches him, seemingly unaware that she is dripping in blood, oblivious as it runs down her face and trickles onto the floor.

SPIKE crawls backwards across the stone floor of the crypt, backing away from the bloody DAWN.

DAWN
[approaching SPIKE, cautiously, still blood-laden]
What’s wrong with you?

SPIKE
[still backing away with fear and horror, desperate]
No. No, get away from away from me…

SPIKE starts scanning the crypt, his eyes dart about, as though looking for a route of escape.

DAWN
[out of sight]
Or maybe it’s not you.

SPIKE’s eyes shoot back to DAWN as she says this. He pants panickedly and erratically, and frowns in desperate confusion as he looks at her. She is no longer covered in blood; she appears just as she was.

DAWN
It’s not you, is it?… It’s me.

SPIKE thinks DAWN is talking about his guilt, his obsession, his hallucination, i.e. his soul.
DAWN thinks SPIKE is talking about his chip ‘malfunctioning’.

SPIKE
No, it’s not you. You’re just a reminder. It’s
her. It’s still her. This is all still that bitch’s
fault. It’s Buffy.

DAWN
Buffy? Spike this has nothing to do with
Buffy. Your chip- I don’t know what’s wrong
with it, but it’s got nothing to do with Buffy.
You have to stop blaming her for everything.

SPIKE
I loved her. I loved her with all my so-
…with everything I am. And she threw me
aside. She used me.

DAWN
Spike-

SPIKE
[Interrupting]
And you know what the worst part is? It’s not
that she tossed me away like a used tab. It’s
not that she said she never loved me. The
worst part of all of this… is that she never
believed that I loved her.

DAWN
[with controlled anger]
You tried to rape her.

Scene: Cemetery [Ext.], Night
…BUFFY sprints through the cemetery to the crypt…

Scene: Spike’s Crypt [Int.], Night

SPIKE
(Continued)
[pained]
I didn’t want to! God, I didn’t want to! Everything
felt wrong, everything. None of it was supposed
to happen like that. I never asked to love her.
I didn’t want any of this! But I got it anyway.
I love her. And I had to prove it to her somehow.

DAWN
[angry, screaming]
By trying to rape her?!!

SPIKE
By restoring my soul!!

DAWN gasps, shocked and silenced by the implication of what SPIKE has just told her.

SPIKE is shocked at what he has just let slip. He turns away.

DAWN leans back against the wall, stunned and struggling to understand.

SPIKE
[calmer, sorrowful]
She didn’t believe. She refused to believe
that I’d changed. That I wasn’t a killer. That
I was good.
[laughs a small, ironic laugh]
So I made them restore my soul. Only instead
of making things better, it made them ten
times worse. The sounds in my head, the
throbbing, the pain, the want just got clearer.
Harsher. The voices of all the people I killed,
and maimed, got louder.

DAWN looks on, still shocked and uneasy.

SPIKE continues to reflect aloud…

SPIKE
I don’t care what they tell you, having a soul
doesn’t make you a good person… it just
makes you realise how bad you are.

DAWN
Spike-

SPIKE
Don’t call me that! You know how I got name?!

DAWN
[calmly]
Yeah. I know.

SPIKE
Is that who I am?! Am I Spike?!!

DAWN
You can’t change the past. You can’t change
what you’ve done. But if you know now that
it was wrong, you can start to make up for it.

SPIKE
How can I? I could spend the rest of my
unnaturally long afterlife trying to atone for
all the things I did, and I never would. There’s
too much. You don’t know… you haven’t
felt it.

DAWN
I don’t need to.

SPIKE
[frustrated, with himself as much as DAWN]
Yes, you do. The second they restored it…
the second I felt my soul bleed into me, I felt
all the pain and suffering and death that I
caused bleed back in as well. It was supposed
to make me alive again… it wound up making
me more dead.

DAWN
That’s not-

SPIKE
[interrupting]
Yeah, it is. It’s why I hid it from myself, hid it
from you. But it didn’t go away. It got worse.
It drove me mad. And I hurt the few people
in this hell of a world that I actually loved…

SPIKE turns around. DAWN has tears welling in her eyes.

SPIKE
(continued)
…I hurt you.

DAWN reaches forward and wipes a tear from SPIKE's cheek. He falls to his knees and rests his head on Dawn's chest while Dawn strokes the back of his head.

SPIKE
[whispers]
I killed all those people…

The crypt door bursts open as BUFFY enters. She stops, seeing DAWN protecting and comforting SPIKE.

DAWN rests her head on top of SPIKE’s and both cry.

BUFFY stops in the doorway, stunned and confused.

Scene: Summers’ House, Kitchen [Int.], Morning
WILLOW is in the kitchen. There is a knock at the door.

WILLOW answers the door. It’s Amy.

AMY
Hi. Can I come in?

WILLOW
Why?

AMY
Well, because last time we spoke outside the
house, we didn’t exactly leave on the best of
terms. I don’t want that to happen again.

WILLOW
You know, a good way would be to stop nearly
getting us both killed.

AMY
I know. I’m sorry. And I’d like to try and work
it out. That is, if you want to-

WILLOW
[conceding]
I’d like that.

WILLOW steps aside to let AMY in.

AMY
I admit, I used to have a problem. I mean, I
was addicted. To the magicks. Not totally,
you know, but I could see myself getting there.
And going to see Rack didn’t help. But it’s
going to be better, I guess- now he’s dead.
It’ll be easier.

WILLOW
So you’re going to stop?

AMY
No. I can’t. Not completely. I shouldn’t have
to, and neither should you. The magick doesn’t
have to be dangerous. It’s a part of me, and
you. If I lost it, I’d be losing a part of myself.

WILLOW
The scary, black-eyes part?

AMY
The ‘Amy Madison part’. Or part of the Amy
Madison part, anyway. It’s not just what the
magick does, the effects that you see; it’s
more than that. Karnstein was right about
one thing, you know…

WILLOW
[guessing]
He hates witches?

AMY
(continued)
The magick does choose you. It’s a part of
you no matter what. You can choose not to
use it, but you can’t make it go away. You’ve
tried that, and it didn’t work- it just took a hold
of you even more strongly. Maybe you should
try another approach.
[moving to the door]
I have to go.

AMY opens the door and walks out.

AMY
[turning to close the door]
You can’t erase it. But maybe you can control it.

Pause.

AMY shuts the door and leaves.

WILLOW is left to think about what AMY has said.

ENDING CREDITS
