Thin, Fine Hair -- Hair is Stylin'

My mother and I have a long-term, on-going dispute on how I should style my hair. My hair is very fine, somewhat thin, but wavy when it is longer. I feel that allowing it all to grow out and not have bangs is the better route for me and my hair, however, she constantly nags at me stating that bangs and a short bob would make my hair thicker. The fate of my hair rests on you... who is right, and what do you suggest for a hair style??
