Dear Belarusian Friends,
Please let me congratulate President Lukashenko on his resounding reelection victory and the people of your brave country for standing up to intimidation, disinformation and slander, and delivering a stirring example to the rest of the world.
For months now myself and many other friends of peace and justice have defended your courageous nation and people, and have attempted to tear through the wall of lies and libel directed at your president and your country.
Your victory today is a triumph for all of us, for people around the world who believe that might is not right; that all nations and all peoples are equals - and brothers - and that having the deadliest military arsenal and the mightiest propaganda apparatus does not entitle one nation to dictate to others which course they have to adopt economically and politically.
Your neighbors - Russia, Ukraine, Macedonia, Moldova, Bulgaria, Slovakia and the people of Yugoslavia - and peoples throughout the world will take great heart in witnessing how even a comparatively small nation like Belarus can stand on principle and integrity to defend its own independence and dignity, and in so doing defend that of all of us.
On a personal note, your nation's brave example fills me with even more pride, as my paternal grandfather came to the United States from Belarus, from Brest-Litovsk, in 1913.
As the peace-loving and democratic majority of humanity eventually turns back the tide of global militarism and the bullying and autocracy that currently threatens the world, we will look back on yesterday's election in Belarus as an historical turning point.
